2026 FIFA World Cup Countdown: New York and New Jersey Prepare

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, excitement builds in New York and New Jersey. Alex Lasry, CEO of the NYNJ Host Committee, recently shared updates on the event. He outlined plans for a complimentary fan experience across the five boroughs and New Jersey, emphasizing that public transportation will be ready to accommodate approximately 1.2 million visitors. In an interesting detail, Lasry mentioned that real grass will be laid down at MetLife Stadium for the games, indicating the global anticipation surrounding this significant sporting occasion.

The 2026 World Cup is noteworthy, marking the first time the tournament will take place in the U.S. since 1994. As part of the festivities, FIFA has announced an inaugural halftime show during the final at MetLife Stadium. Coldplay, via a post on X, revealed that Chris Martin will curate the show, which will feature performances by BTS, Madonna, and Shakira. Shakira is also set to drop the official World Cup anthem, titled “Die Die,” later today.

This musical showcase aims to generate funds for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which seeks to enhance access to quality education and football for children globally.

The tournament will be aired in its entirety on FOX, starting with the opening match on June 11 in Mexico. The Mexican national team, known as El Tri, will compete against South Africa in Mexico City, while South Korea is set to face Croatia in Guadalajara.

Canada will also join in, facing Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on the following day. The U.S. men’s national team, having undergone a challenging series of friendlies recently, is prepared to take on Paraguay in Los Angeles. They will then head to Seattle to compete against Australia on June 19, wrapping up group stages against Turkey in Los Angeles on June 25.

With the size and significance of this event, FIFA is pulling out all the stops for entertainment. Some fans are even discussing whether Katy Perry is a suitable choice to headline the opening ceremony.

In Los Angeles, the opening ceremony, set for June 12, will feature a lineup of artists like Katy Perry, Future, Anitta, Lisa, Rema, and Tyra. “This opening ceremony symbolizes the extraordinary scale of the 2026 World Cup,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino, adding that the artist selection reflects the diverse cultural landscape of the U.S. and its rich musical heritage.

The ceremony will kick off 90 minutes before the U.S. game and will be accompanied by two other opening ceremonies in Canada and Mexico. Notably, in Toronto, the event will include performances from Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, and Michael Bublé, among others. Meanwhile, Mexico’s opening ceremony will feature artists like Alejandro Fernandez and J Balvin.

The FIFA World Cup promises over 100 matches, unfolding in 16 cities across three nations, culminating in a grand finale in New Jersey. There’s no doubt this tournament will produce memorable moments.
