Anthony Richardson Prepared to Compete After Injury Recovery
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is said to be ready to compete again after dealing with an injury setback. It appears he is now set to go head-to-head with Daniel Jones for the starting position.
At just 23, Richardson had season-ending surgery to fix a shoulder issue that he faced during the 2023 season. This No. 4 overall draft pick missed the last two weeks of the Colts’ offseason practices in June due to the same shoulder discomfort.
Initially, when Richardson reported pain in June from his repaired shoulder, the Colts’ medical team believed that some rest would alleviate the problem, according to a report.
With training camp set to kick off next week, all players must report by Tuesday. Richardson’s journey in the NFL has seen ups and downs over his two seasons, and he’s been part of some crucial training camp moments. Head coach Shane Steichen has indicated that the quarterback position is up for grabs.
The Colts have signed Daniel Jones to a one-year, $14 million deal, creating some competition for Richardson.
Richardson’s Performance So Far
Looking at his short career, Richardson holds an 8-7 record across 15 games. It certainly reflects his performance throughout this time. The former Florida standout has completed just over 50% of his passes, amassing 2,391 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
On the plus side, he has been a threat with his legs, averaging nearly six yards per rushing attempt, accumulating 635 yards, along with 10 rushing touchdowns to his name.
A Quick Look at Daniel Jones
Meanwhile, Daniel Jones, now 28, found himself released mid-season last year by the New York Giants after 10 games. He later signed with the Minnesota Vikings, although he didn’t appear in any games for them.
In his career, Jones has started 69 games, boasting a 24-44-1 record. Last season, he recorded a completion rate of 63.3%, throwing for 2,070 yards, with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Giants’ performance dipped to 2-8 during his starts last year, which complicates his history.
