Teen Arrested After Allegedly Making Threat on Airplane

A Missouri teenager visiting friends in South Florida was supposed to take a Spirit Airlines flight back to Kansas City on Monday. The flight was scheduled to leave Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at 2:37 PM.

However, it ended up being delayed by more than five hours, finally departing at 7:44 PM. This significant delay was caused by concerns from both passengers and crew after the teen allegedly mentioned a bomb.

Authorities reported that the 16-year-old allegedly claimed, “there is a bomb in my pocket.” Following this comment, Spirit Airlines redirected the aircraft to a remote area for safety checks, and passengers were evacuated without incident. Law enforcement searched the plane and found no explosives.

According to reports, the airline incurred losses of around $50,000 due to the incident.

A spokesperson from the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the teen was taken into custody and is facing charges for criminal mischief exceeding $1,000, as well as making false bomb threats.

The mother of the teen defended him, suggesting that his comment was merely a misguided attempt at humor. She described him as a “good child” who was just joking around rather than intending to cause panic.

The boy’s father, seeking leniency during a juvenile court hearing, remarked, “I don’t think he acted criminally. He was acting, in my opinion, like an immature 16-year-old.” Unfortunately for them, the judge ordered a psychological evaluation and kept the teen in custody, leaving some people, perhaps, questioning if this is too harsh for what he intended as a joke.
