Chicago Sky player Angel Reese has shared her thoughts on the ongoing negotiations between the WNBA and the players’ union, expressing that the league’s latest proposal feels “disrespectful.” During an interview at the WNBA All-Star weekend, she remarked, “It was eye-opening for me,” emphasizing her disappointment with how the players’ suggestions seemed ignored.
Reese is a well-known figure in the WNBA, known for her engaging rivalry with player Caitlin Clark, dating back to their college days. The 2024 season witnessed record-breaking viewership and attendance, particularly highlighted by games featuring these two athletes.
“Women’s basketball is clearly on the rise, and it’s crucial that we get what we want—not just now, but for the future,” Reese noted, appreciating the presence of veteran players who advocate for the current generation. However, the recent meeting between the players and league officials did not result in a deal, leaving some players frustrated. For instance, New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu criticized the league’s negotiations as settling for the lowest possible outcome.
Reese has previously ignited conversation on social media, suggesting players might consider sitting out games to push for higher salaries. She highlighted the financial difficulties many players face, stating, “WNBA doesn’t pay my bills,” and referencing her own struggles to cover necessary expenses like rent.
Despite the criticisms, WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engelbert described the recent meeting as “constructive,” remaining optimistic about reaching a positive agreement in the future. Meanwhile, Reese’s comments underscore the pressing need for change in the league regarding player compensation and support.
The players’ union opted out of the existing collective bargaining agreement ahead of its deadline last October, giving both sides a year to negotiate before it affects the impending 2025 season.
