Susan Collins' Approval Rating Hits Historic Low Following Breaks with GOP and Trump on Several Important Votes

Susan Collins, the Republican Senator from Maine, has seen her approval ratings fluctuate notably after a challenging summer filled with significant votes, some in opposition to party lines and President Donald Trump. According to a recent poll from Morning Consult, the data reveals a declining trend in her favorability, with only 38% of Mainers approving of her performance. This represents one of the lowest approval rates recorded in her tenure.

The past quarter indicated that, as of late 2024, Collins had 47% approval against 44% disapproval; however, that number has shifted quite a bit now, with 54% of respondents expressing discontent. So, it seems public sentiment has changed—perhaps tied to her resistance against some key elements of Trump’s agenda, such as when she voted against a significant $9 billion recovery package, highlighting concerns about its impact on Medicaid.

In her defense, Collins has expressed strong support for tax cuts benefiting families and small businesses, noting the potentially harmful effects the package could have on low-income families and rural healthcare services. She is also part of a trio of Republican senators who opposed Trump’s major legislation, which was signed into law recently, citing similar concerns regarding Medicaid reforms. During this time, she proposed raising taxes on billionaires to help fund rural hospitals, aimed at those earning above $25 million annually.

Rumors have sparked regarding her reelection plans for 2026, though she has yet to formally announce. Encouragingly for her, the fundraising reports have been strong. Her campaign arsenal currently shows a solid financial position with $5 million in cash, a good sign as she heads into what could be a tough election cycle.

Interestingly, despite the challenges, Collins won re-election in 2020 even as Joe Biden carried Maine, suggesting that she can still hold considerable sway among the electorate. Polling from mid-May returns a somewhat favorable view, with 49% of respondents thinking positively about her, although opinions seem split.

Collins’ appeal may partly stem from her accessibility and willingness to engage with constituents. Her spokesperson highlighted that voters tend to feel neglected by other representatives, which she actively combats. Meanwhile, potential Democratic challengers like David Costello and Jordan Wood are already in the running as the political landscape shifts.

In the last round of polling, only a handful of Republican senators, such as Mitch McConnell and Ron Johnson, also faced negative approval ratings, showing just how pressing the situation has become for some in the party.
