Trump on Iran Deal: No Link to Economic Concerns

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump stated that the deteriorating financial conditions for Americans had no bearing on efforts to negotiate a deal with Iran.

During a press briefing, Daily Caller correspondent Reagan Reese asked Trump whether rising inflation, particularly in energy and food, was influencing the administration’s decision-making regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran. Trump dismissed the notion entirely, asserting, “I don’t care about the financial situation of the American people.”

Reese inquired, “To what extent does the economic situation of the American people motivate you to enter into an agreement?”

Trump responded firmly, “Not even a little bit. When we talk about Iran, the only thing that matters is that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. I don’t care about the economic situation of Americans, and I don’t care about anyone else.”

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released on Tuesday showed a continued rise in inflation in the U.S., with significant increases in energy and food prices. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), grocery prices increased by a seasonally adjusted 0.6% in April, following a 0.9% rise in March.

With the midterm Congressional elections approaching in just over five months, Trump’s comments may be seized upon by the Democratic Party. Voter dissatisfaction regarding the Iran war is mounting, along with growing concerns about the Republican Party’s handling of the economy.

After Trump’s remarks, White House communications director Stephen Chan stated, “The president’s ultimate responsibility is the safety and security of the American people. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and unless action is taken, it will have one. This threatens all Americans.”
