Investigation Sought into Belmont University by Tennessee Rep

Rep. Andy Ogles from Tennessee is calling for an investigation into Belmont University following the release of recordings where university officials admit to continuing their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. They claim these programs are simply being rebranded to avoid controversy, especially in light of federal orders aimed at ending what some see as discriminatory practices.

The recordings suggest that university staff have discussed maintaining programs while concealing their registration of undocumented immigrants from outside parties. Ogles criticized the university’s administration for promoting what he describes as anti-Gospel ideas, stating that Belmont, while identifying as a Christian institution, contradicts its principles.

“In response to President Trump’s call for universities to dismantle DEI programs or risk losing federal funding, officials at Belmont were allegedly caught on camera discussing how to continue their agenda despite the changes,” Ogles told a news source.

Ogles pointed out that Belmont has sought to integrate its DEI initiatives into other campus programs, using terminology that masks their original purpose. He referenced a quote from an administrator about the school’s strategy: “We’re always trying to adapt to what’s happening around us, but that doesn’t mean we’re stopping completely.”

The university has become part of a broader conversation about how institutions are reportedly re-evaluating DEI policies to dodge potential financial repercussions stemming from federal mandates. According to a recent investigation, many universities are still operating DEI offices, with efforts to rebrand rather than dismantle these initiatives.

Concerns raised by Ogles have prompted additional testimonies from faculty and students, revealing ongoing DEI practices at Belmont. One professor purportedly provided a form requiring faculty to include a “diversity impact statement” for new courses.

Belmont has responded defensively, describing the claims of “shadow manipulation” as misleading. They assert that the university is in compliance with federal regulations and look forward to addressing any legal inquiries with state officials.

In an email to the Belmont community, university president L. Gregory Jones emphasized the school’s commitment to federal legal standards, promoting a campus culture rooted in Christian values.

Amidst these discussions, Ogles has raised alarms about potential violations of a Tennessee law that targets organizations for harboring undocumented individuals. The situation, he suggests, poses legal risks for the university if it is found to be operating outside of state regulations.
