Edwin J. Feulner, Key Figure in Conservative Movement, Dies at 83

Edwin J. Feulner, a significant figure in the American conservative movement and one of the co-founders of the Heritage Foundation, passed away on Friday at the age of 83. He was known for his long tenure as president of the organization, first from 1977 to 2013, then again from 2017 to 2018, making him the longest-serving president since the think tank’s establishment in 1973.

In a joint statement, Heritage President Kevin Roberts and Councillors Chairman Barb Van Ander Gabby spoke highly of Feulner, describing him as “a visionary, builder, and a patriot of the highest order.” They noted his deep love for the country and commitment to protecting the principles that have allowed America to thrive.

Feulner played a critical role in initiating Project 2025, a controversial project aimed at offering right-wing policy recommendations for a potential second Trump administration. He participated in meetings with former President Donald Trump leading up to the last election and was also involved in Trump’s transition team during his first term.

His leadership at Heritage was pivotal in forming a new model of conservative policy advocacy that shaped Reagan-era reforms and brought market-focused ideas into mainstream politics. Feulner’s work on Project 2025, while attracting both praise and criticism, included a detailed transition plan for Trump’s administration.

An author of nine books and engaged in various conservative organizations, Feulner had a lasting impact. Roberts and Gabby highlighted his belief in “big tent conservatism,” emphasizing unity and growth rather than division. They reflected on his memorable phrases, such as “people are policy,” underscoring how his ideas will continue to influence upcoming generations of conservative leaders.

Feulner is survived by his wife, Lina, along with their children and grandchildren. Although the cause of his death has not been disclosed, Roberts and Gabby expressed a commitment to honoring his legacy by carrying forward his mission with determination and integrity.
