Capito Secures Republican Nomination in West Virginia Senate Primary
Senator Shelley Moore Capito, a Republican from West Virginia, is positioned to secure re-election, aided by the backing of former President Donald Trump. In the recent Republican primary, she comfortably surpassed five challengers, clinching the party’s nomination in this predominantly Republican state.
Capito has an extensive political background, having served two terms in the House of Representatives for over a decade before being elected to the Senate in 2014. Notably, she made history as the first female senator from West Virginia. Her political roots run deep; her father, Arch Moore Jr., was a former three-term governor as well as a six-term congressman.
Among her opponents in the primary was state Senator Tom Willis, who argued it was “time for change” and criticized “career politicians.” However, Capito leveraged Trump’s support throughout her campaign. She expressed her gratitude for Trump’s endorsement, stating it empowered her to work on issues like job protection in West Virginia and securing borders.
On primary day, Capito declared her pride in leading the party’s ticket alongside Trump in West Virginia. The National Republican Senatorial Committee, which backs her, emphasized that she is “ready to continue fighting alongside President Trump to prioritize West Virginia.” Trump himself also highlighted Capito’s victory, framing it as a clear indication of support for his policies.
West Virginia has shifted significantly toward Republican ideals in recent years; Trump won the state by over 40 points in 2024. Today, it stands as a strong Republican stronghold.
As she heads into the November midterm elections, Capito is deemed a considerable favorite, with her race being classified as solidly Republican by leading political analysts. Currently, Republicans maintain a 53-47 majority in the Senate.
On the Democratic side, former Morgantown City Council member Rachel Fetty Anderson successfully secured her nomination, emerging victorious over four competitors.
