Explosion in Bath Incident Leads to Serious Injuries

Renita François’s quest for tranquility took a drastic turn. According to former city hall officials, she was seriously harmed when a candle she lit in her bath exploded, sending hot wax flying onto her face and arms.

The incident occurred on January 19, 2023, at her home in Valley Creek, and has left François feeling that her life has changed in ways that are “irreversible.” She described the experience in court documents, detailing how the explosion resulted in severe burns on her face and arms, with the heat causing her eyelashes to melt and singeing her eyebrows.

The agonizing heat left her skin in a “burning” state, and she compared the pain to something “instantaneous, merciless, and beyond what” she had ever faced before. Her husband, Maxevan, witnessed the horror of the event, noting how the burning wax blistered her skin.

Rushed to the emergency room, the 41-year-old said the aftermath “fractured” her confidence. The second-degree burns became a constant reminder of both her physical pain and her emotional struggles. She described it as an attack on her self-awareness, which feels like a tragedy averted.

The candles in question, available for around $17 and made in Canada, were criticized for their “substandard materials” and lacked safety measures, leading to an unfair risk of explosions, she argued in court. François specifically pointed out that the chemical additives in the wax made it “very flammable.”

Despite prior knowledge of potential hazards, the company continued selling these candles until 2016, which underscores the risks associated with their products. In her legal claim, she also recalled cases of injuries resulting from similar incidents involving candle explosions.

François had been a prominent speaker during Mayor Bill de Blasio’s initiatives on neighborhood safety from 2018 to 2022, but now finds herself grappling with fear when entering public venues. She noted that, unlike before where she was bold and confident, her injuries overshadow her words as she steps into meetings and discussions.

Currently, she seeks unspecified damages, emphasizing that the lawsuit is not merely about compensation or accountability but aims to hold businesses responsible for prioritizing profit over consumer safety.

As of now, Bath & Body Works and Premier have not responded to requests for comments regarding the case.
