John Stewart Reacts to CBS’s Decision Not to Renew Colbert’s Late Show
John Stewart, the host of The Daily Show, has found himself in the midst of discussions about CBS’s choice not to renew The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which airs on Comedy Central.
During an episode of the Weekly Show, Stewart addressed listener questions and pondered whether Skydance Media believed that his own show would face a similar fate after merging with Paramount.
“That’s a fair question,” Stewart mused. “Unfortunately, I haven’t received any word from them. No one reached out to me to say, ‘Hey, don’t get too cozy in that office, Stewart.’ Though, to be fair, I’ve been booted from worse places.”
“Honestly, I’m not sure,” he continued. “I… I want to think that without The Daily Show, it’s like a dull background noise, kind of like Comedy Central now. The only real voice left in our current lineup seems to be South Park.”
Previous reports from Breitbart News have indicated that CBS described its decision to cancel Colbert’s show as a financial one, while considering Colbert as part of the “Pantheon of Great People.”
The cancellation of Colbert’s show marks a significant shift in late-night television dynamics amid the rise of streaming services. Younger audiences are gravitating toward new media instead of traditional formats. CBS executives acknowledged Stephen Colbert’s contributions, referring to him as part of the “Pantheon of Great People” at the time of cancellation.
“We will regard Stephen Colbert as irreplaceable and he will retire from the ‘Late Show’ franchise in May 2026,” a CBS executive stated. “I’m proud that Stephen called CBS home, and his legacy will join the greats of late-night television. This is purely a financial choice, not a comment on the show’s performance or any other issues at Paramount.”
In light of the news regarding Colbert, former President Donald Trump commented that Colbert’s talent was perhaps less than he believed it to be.
“I’m thrilled to see Colbert let go,” Trump remarked. “His talent was overrated. I’ve even heard Jimmy Kimmel could be next, and he has even less talent than Colbert! Honestly, Greg Gutfeld surpasses all of them combined, including that NBC host who ruined the great Tonight Show.”
