Tennis Icon Martina Navratilova Criticizes Gavin Newsom for Allowing Boys to Compete Against Girls in California High School Track

Martina Navratilova Challenges Governor Newsom on Transgender Athlete Issue

Martina Navratilova, a renowned figure in women’s tennis, recently engaged Governor Gavin Newsom over the contentious debate surrounding transgender athletes in California, particularly as it relates to the upcoming girls’ high school track and field championships.

A participant in this year’s tournament was highlighted, having won multiple state finals last year. Under Newsom’s administration, California is allowing males to compete in women’s sports, raising significant concerns.

Navratilova supported a condemnation of this policy and applauded Olympic gold medalists Nancy Hogshead and Kylie Humphries for their stances. She expressed her agreement by stating, “Nancy is right!!! We’re just different!!!” on social media.

In response to another user’s comment, Navratilova indicated that Newsom can swiftly change the situation, stressing that “There are no excuses.” Her subsequent posts included a note about a transgender athlete from Jurupa Valley High School being the top seed in the upcoming tournament, which she found concerning, saying, “Cheating… is allowed by the rules at this time. Thank you for doing nothing, Gavin Newsom.”

Like Hogshead, who has been vocal about protecting women’s sports, Navratilova, despite her support for Democratic policies on various issues, stands firm on this topic.

Hogshead reacted to recent statements from Newsom’s office that called for discussions around the issue to be handled “with fairness, decency and respect.” She pointed out that the 2013 law permitting students to participate in “single-sex” sports based on gender identity neglected to uphold these principles for female athletes.

Hogshead stated, “Governor Newsom appears to be excluding female students from his standards of ‘equity, dignity, and respect.’ It is impossible for men, regardless of circumstances, to respect women’s unique biology and compete fairly.” She emphasized the necessity for formal gender segregation in sports.

Hogshead secured three gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Olympic bobsledder Humphries, a California resident who has supported Donald Trump, also criticized the governor, suggesting he focus on hosting the Olympics instead of advocating for policies that diverge from mainstream American views.

Humphries, who has a notable record in bobsledding, awarded President Trump the Order of Ikkos for his contributions to women’s sports, noting the importance of including biological women and ensuring fair competition.

Additionally, a lawsuit was filed last July by the Department of Justice against California officials for allegedly infringing Title IX, which protects against sex discrimination in educational programs.
