WNBA: Kelsey Mitchell Discusses Treatment of Angel Reese
Kelsey Mitchell, a player for the Indiana Fever, recently shared her views on how fans have reacted to Chicago Sky star Angel Reese. During an interview at the WNBA All-Star Game, a reporter raised concerns about the negativity aimed at Reese, particularly as a black woman.
“I think it’s crucial to focus less on color and more on the humanity we share,” Mitchell stated. “If we hold onto the decency that we, as women, bring to the court, then it’s clear that Angel Reese is a strong presence both on and off the floor. We need to represent that firmly.”
When pressed about the negativity directed at Reese, Mitchell didn’t hold back, saying simply, “God bless you.” There was a sense of empathy as she expressed hope that people could heal and avoid making hurtful comments.
“We really hope that this season moves in a direction that’s positive, especially with our fans. Negative comments can be pretty disrespectful to what we’re striving for,” she added.
Reese has garnered a mixed reputation within the league, attracting a passionate fan base and engaging in a noted rivalry with player Caitlin Clark. The competition between them traces back to their college days, especially highlighted during a record-breaking rookie season in 2024.
Reese faced backlash for a gesture during the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, when she pointed to her ring finger to provoke Clark after her team’s victory. While this moment raised her profile, it also led to oscillating opinions about her conduct.
Notably, claims of fan abuse directed at Reese sparked a WNBA investigation earlier this year after an event on May 17th. The league concluded ten days later that the accusations of hateful remarks were unfounded.
“We appreciate the thorough and swift response from the WNBA regarding these allegations. At Gainbridge Field House, we aim to foster a welcoming atmosphere for both players and fans. Hate has no place in our community,” Mitchell emphasized.
US Senator Jim Banks has also weighed in, criticizing both the WNBA and Reese’s statements. He referred to the investigation, claiming that no evidence was found to support claims of racism among Indiana Fever fans.
“Reese accused our fans of being racist. The investigation cleared those claims. It’s unfortunate, and she should apologize to our state and the dedicated fans who attend these games,” Banks remarked.
As this dialogue continues, the questions around Reese’s allegations linger. Mitchell’s sentiments reflect a broader hope for unity and respect among fans and players alike, aiming to create a more positive environment in professional sports.
