Stephen Colbert Addresses LOTR Fan Concerns Over New Movie
Late-night host Stephen Colbert has responded to backlash from Lord of the Rings fans regarding his involvement in directing a new movie based on the franchise.
In several interviews, including a recent one with The Hollywood Reporter, Colbert discussed the end of The Late Show and what lies ahead for him. The Hollywood Reporter highlighted that this new venture, which Colbert has been working on for six years, is something of a dream come true for him as a self-proclaimed superfan.
During the interview, Colbert was asked why fans should trust him to co-write the film. Some skeptics seemed to think his fame and enthusiasm might not be enough. Colbert’s response was quite straightforward: “There’s really no reason to do that. You just have to follow your heart and the techniques you’ve learned to turn this into a drama, not just a fandom.”
He expressed gratitude for collaborating with skilled professionals like co-writer Philippa Boyens, emphasizing that the process has been enjoyable so far.
Originally, Colbert announced his role in this project back in March, saying the movie would be based on the eighth chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring, specifically “The Mist of Barrow Downs.” He mentioned his long connection to the source material, recalling how much he had read the beginning chapters of the story.
Interestingly, the entire series written by J.R.R. Tolkien has garnered a mixed reception. While it’s cherished by many, some on the left, including figures like Rachel Maddow, have claimed it has been appropriated by the far-right.
There is a palpable tension among fans, especially after the recent critical reception of Amazon’s Rings of Power series, which was perceived by many as a modern, liberal interpretation of the classic tales that diverged from Peter Jackson’s beloved adaptations. This backdrop likely adds to the unease surrounding Colbert’s new project.
