Angel Reese Speaks on Cyberbullying and Its Impact
Angel Reese, the All-Star forward for the Chicago Sky, recently opened up about the cyberbullying she’s faced since becoming a standout player for the 2023 LSU Tigers Women’s Basketball National Championship team. In a candid interview with ESPN, she discussed launching a campaign to raise awareness about this serious issue.
“It was tough for me at first,” Reese admitted during her conversation with Elle Duncan from ESPN. “After winning the national championship, my life changed completely. I started seeing negativity online that I had never encountered before. My follower count went up drastically, and, well, when people found my address, I even had to change my car.”
She reflected on how this kind of scrutiny can affect players. “Even if someone feels like they can handle it, you know, thick skin doesn’t mean everyone is the same. So, my teammates often check in on me—’Are you okay? How are you holding up?’ Honestly, I’m still figuring out what’s real, but I’m trying to open up more,” she said.
The conversation also touched upon a notable rivalry that emerged during the 2023 National Championship Game, particularly involving fellow player Kate Linklark. Reese shared that she feels more connected to her fellow All-Stars this year compared to the previous year. “Last year, I was pretty quiet in Phoenix during the All-Star Game. I didn’t really engage with anyone,” she noted, expressing her appreciation for the community within the league.
Reese also mentioned that the realities of cyberbullying aren’t only affecting her. “There are many out there who aren’t as strong. I want to give back and help as much as I can,” she explained.
As she prepares for her second WNBA All-Star Game, Reese is currently averaging 14 points and 12.6 rebounds per game. It seems her journey continues to evolve, both on and off the court.
