In Portrush, Northern Ireland, Chris Gotterup embraced his underdog status at this week’s British Open, treating it like “House Money.” He shot a solid 68 on Saturday, putting him at 8 under par and earning him a tie for fourth place. “I think anything from here is a bonus,” he shared. “I expect to give it my all and see where it leads.”

Just a week ago, Gotterup claimed victory at the Scotland Open. This pivotal win has opened doors for him, allowing him to participate in the iconic UK open. It’s safe to say he’s making the most of it.

“In recent weeks, particularly with my experience at Oakmont, I feel like I’ve gained some insight,” he mentioned, reflecting on his growth. “The atmosphere here has really struck a chord with me.”

Gotterup, who played college golf at Rutgers in Oklahoma, tried to keep it simple, avoiding overthinking his situation. “Honestly, I think I’m becoming more comfortable,” he remarked, noting that he’s in control of his game and mindset.

When asked how he’s managed to find this rhythm, he admitted, “I have no idea. I wish I could pinpoint it. I’ve thought about that a lot. If I can just identify what’s working, I can carry that knowledge with me next time.”

Feeling a surge of confidence, it seems this learning curve has been steep but rewarding. “These past few months have been quite informative,” he observed. “I’ve been figuring out what makes my game tick and using it for future tournaments.”

The 25-year-old is quickly establishing himself among golf’s promising young talents. While discussions about the Ryder Cup may be on the horizon, for now, his focus is on the impending competition.

“There’s a job to finish here on Sunday,” he said, heightening the importance of the final round as he chases down leaders like Schaeffler. “Scotty has been the top player for quite a while. I need to put my best foot forward. And honestly, it’s not just Scotty; there’s a strong field overall.”
