New York’s World of Darkness Exhibit Reopens After 16 Years
New York’s intriguing exhibit, World of Darkness, is making a comeback after a 16-year hiatus, showcasing the unique “shadow charms” of the Bronx Zoo alongside over two dozen rare nocturnal animals.
The revamped display, which opened to visitors on Saturday, allows guests to observe the behaviors and adaptations of 25 different species, including two-toed sloths and vampire bats. Attendees purchasing tickets to the Bronx Zoo will also have access to the sprawling 13,000-square-foot habitat exhibit.
In addition to the well-known aye-aye, the exhibition now features an array of fascinating creatures.
Officials emphasized that the reopening of the World of Darkness offers an immersive experience, enabling guests to observe the extraordinary wildlife that has adapted to nighttime living.
The zoo’s initial dark exhibit debuted in 1969, being the first significant zoo display to feature nocturnal animals under “backlight” conditions. This design allows visitors to witness the nocturnal world in action during daytime hours.
After the original exhibit closed in April 2009 due to financial challenges, this new version boasts programmable LED lighting systems that replicate the gradual rise and fall of sunlight, continuing the legacy of innovative lighting.
The upgraded night house promises immersive soundscapes, interactive installations, and meticulously recreated habitats, ranging from tropical forests to deserts and caves.
Guests will encounter hands-on educational consoles and photography stations, plus close views of intriguing animals like blood pythons, tarantulas, and naked mole rats.
This exhibit is also noteworthy for being the only permanent bilingual attraction in the zoo, with all educational materials available in both English and Spanish.
Rare species, such as cloud rats and Guatemalan beaded lizards, will also be showcased, providing a unique addition to the zoo’s offerings.
Many New Yorkers hold fond memories of the original exhibit from 1969. Zoo officials have mentioned their commitment to refreshing every aspect of the experience to create an incredible journey into this rarely seen world of shadows.
