Algeria and Austria progress to World Cup knockout stage following an exciting conclusion.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thrilling 3-3 Draw Advances Austria and Algeria

Austrian and Algerian teams faced off in a gripping conclusion to their World Cup group stage match on Saturday night, ultimately ending in a dramatic 3-3 tie. This result allowed both nations to move on to the finals, while Iran was left eliminated from the tournament.

The game was tense. With the score at 2-0 nearing the end, Riyad Mahrez netted his second goal in stoppage time, seemingly sealing the deal for Algeria. However, Austria’s Sasa Kalajdzic quickly answered back, heading in an equalizer shortly after, saving Austria’s World Cup aspirations.

Austria saw goals from Marko Arnautovic and Marcel Sabitzer as well, earning them second place in Group J behind Argentina for the first time since 1982. They will face European champions Spain on Thursday in Los Angeles.

For Les Fennecs, Rafik Bergari also scored. Despite finishing third in their group, Algeria became the ninth African team out of ten to advance and hopes for an easier matchup against Switzerland in the round of 32 on Thursday night, set to take place in Vancouver, British Columbia.

A win for either team would have meant Iran could still clinch a spot among the top eight teams in third place. But with Kalajdzic’s last-minute goal, Team Melli faced a heartbreaking exit from the tournament.

In terms of atmosphere, the first three matches held at Arrowhead Stadium showcased fans of Argentina, Ecuador, and the Netherlands. However, the finale brought out a mix of Austrian and Algerian supporters, attracting many locals eager to catch the action at relatively low ticket prices.

Interestingly, the local community has developed a camaraderie with Algeria, as the team has a training base nearby in Lawrence, Kansas.

Among the newer fans, a few might be unaware of “The Shame of Gijon.” It’s a haunting memory for die-hard Algerians who have been seeking retribution since the 1982 World Cup, when Algeria was denied a spot in the next round due to a suspicious match between Austria and West Germany.

There was some apprehension about the possibility of a dull match given that both teams only needed a tie to progress, referred to humorously as a “Kansas City disgrace.” But the crowd of 69,045 witnessed a riveting 90 minutes of soccer.

Austria set the tone early when Arnautovic delivered an impressive performance, skillfully slipping past the Algerian defense to score his 49th international goal against goalkeeper Osama Benbot.

Right before halftime, Algeria’s Bergari managed a left-footed strike that sailed past Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager, leveling the score. The rhythm of the game picked up in the second half, with temperatures soaring in Kansas City.

Eager to reclaim the lead, Austria’s Konrad Reimer launched a swift pass to Sabitzer, who restored their advantage and briefly ignited hope for Iran. Yet Algeria quickly responded with Mahrez finishing off a perfect cross from Houssem Aouar.

As the clock wound down, both teams seemed to hesitate, but in a surprising turn of events, Mahrez and Kalajdzic produced incredible moments during stoppage time, leaving a lasting impression on the match.
