Construction team unintentionally breaks through the living room wall of a couple's NYC apartment: 'I just saw daylight'

Construction Mishap Shakes Up Brooklyn Apartment

A Brooklyn couple had an unsettling wake-up call this week when a construction crew accidentally caused an explosion in their apartment, leaving a significant hole in the living room wall.

This chaotic situation started on a Monday, right as Jamie, a resident of Bushwick, was gearing up for her first onboarding meeting at a new job.

Just as she was about to log on, Jamie noticed that sections of her exposed brick walls had collapsed, and debris was strewn all over the floor.

“I looked at the wall and saw daylight coming through,” Jamie recalled. “There were bricks and dust everywhere, and my luggage was all over the place.”

According to Jamie and the Department of Buildings, the damage stemmed from ongoing demolition work at an old parking lot next door on Himrod Street.

Workers apparently claimed that the old structure was “attached” to her wall, which led to the mishap.

“The excavation looked like it was shaking so hard,” she noted, visibly shaken.

The general contractor, identified as Nech Design of America, hasn’t responded to multiple inquiries.

Upon discovering the mess, Jamie quickly called her girlfriend, who was running errands at the time. “We were understandably furious and anxious,” she said.

Jamie then informed her landlord, who rushed over with his lawyer after seeing a photo of the aftermath.

She joked that her landlord didn’t initially grasp the severity of the situation, but the lawyer’s reaction was far more serious.

“He said, ‘Take this seriously! If there’s further damage or anything else happens, you’re in trouble,'” Jamie explained.

Emergency services eventually arrived, and the Department of Buildings conducted an inspection of Jamie’s unit.

Inspectors found a two-foot by two-foot section of brickwork dislodged due to “impacts from adjacent demolition sites.” Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the DOB issued a suspension order for the site and cited violations for not maintaining the area or reporting the incident.

Just two days later, reports emerged that construction had resumed, despite the stop-work order, but inspectors found no ongoing activities at the site.

In the meantime, Jamie, her girlfriend, and their cat scrambled to find a pet-friendly hotel to stay in.

“My cat has really been affected by the constant moving,” she mentioned.

Jamie stated that the construction company has offered to cover accommodation expenses, but she hasn’t received any formal confirmation yet.

“It was my first day at a new job, and I had to convince people this was really happening to me,” she said, trying to stay light-hearted despite the chaos.

“I think it’s important to find humor in these absurd situations… but I can’t shake the feeling that this is only the beginning of our troubles.”

As of Friday, Jamie was back in her apartment, though repairs were still underway.

Her landlord did not respond to requests for comments regarding the incident.
