WNBA Players Push for Wage Increases
WNBA players have begun their push for higher wages, showing unity by wearing pre-game shirts that read “pay what you owe us.” This comes even as the league struggles to turn a profit.
Before the All-Star Game on Saturday evening, the players donned these shirts, emphasizing their demands during collective bargaining negotiations with the WNBA.
Kelsey Plum of the Los Angeles Sparks mentioned that the players held a meeting that morning to organize their message for before the game. It’s clear they want to make an impact.
“I think this is the largest meeting we’ve had in the history of the league. There were almost 40 players present,” said Nafisa Collier from the Minnesota Lynx. “It sends a strong message about the improvements we feel are necessary.”
The Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) has opted out of the existing collective bargaining agreement, which opens discussions for a new agreement concerning player contracts and conditions. It’s a significant step, given that the WNBA and WNBPA hadn’t met since December.
“I thought Thursday’s meeting with New York Liberty player Breanna Stewart was useful because we were finally in the same room as the league and the governing committee,” she said. “But honestly, it felt somewhat pointless.”
“Their latest proposals don’t align with our perspectives at all,” she continued. “Our initial offer and their response felt entirely disconnected.”
Despite an increasing interest in the WNBA, the league continues to report financial losses. The league reportedly lost $40 million in 2024 despite receiving a $10 million grant from the NBA.
Social media also reflected mixed reactions to the players’ demands for higher wages amidst continuous financial struggles.
“The WNBA loses about $50 million annually and has yet to make a profit. You deserve nothing,” commented one user.
Another user pointed out the irony in the players wearing shirts that demand payment while the league is at a loss.
Yet another added to the conversation, sharing their perspective on the players’ strategy.
The ongoing discussions seem to be far from resolved, and many are left wondering how this will all unfold.
