Car overturns and sinks in water during crash in Polk County; five people hurt

Five individuals were injured in a two-car collision on Sunday morning, which resulted in one vehicle being flipped onto its roof and partially submerged in water. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported that the accident occurred around 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of N.E. 112th Street and East University Avenue, located south of Mitchellville. A deputy, along with several bystanders, managed to right the overturned vehicle back onto its wheels.

An adult male who was in the submerged vehicle was transported to a local hospital via air ambulance, and his condition is currently stable. Meanwhile, two adults and two juveniles from the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and received ground ambulance transport to the hospital.

The sheriff’s office indicated that the Iowa State Patrol is looking into the crash, which temporarily closed westbound traffic on East University Avenue at N.E. 112th Street. By 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, traffic had resumed normal flow on East University.
