New Reports of Violence in Syria

Recently, there have been distressing accounts coming out of Syria, detailing the brutal murder of innocent civilians, especially from the minority Christian and Druze communities. These acts are attributed to forces linked to the Islamic regime under interim president Ahmed Al-Sharara, who has affiliations with terrorist groups in Sunni Islamist areas.

As a Syrian American, I feel a deep connection to my ancestors’ homeland. It’s hard to detach from the human suffering that lies behind each headline. After years of observing the rising threat of Islamism, I feel compelled to raise awareness. A new tyranny is emerging in Syria, cloaked in religious rhetoric, yet as perilous and destructive as the previous one. Following over 55 years of Ba’athist military rule, it’s crucial to confront yet another form of tyranny that is impacting Syria’s early historical moments.

The world has, unfortunately, become numb to Syria’s suffering. Since the Assad regime began a devastating crackdown on anti-government protests in 2011, the nation has become synonymous with war, exile, and loss. More than half a million lives have been lost, and over 13 million people have been displaced, turning once vibrant cities, like my ancestor’s Aleppo, into mere rubble. From the ruins of Bashar al-Assad’s reign, a new authoritarianism is taking shape—this time, it’s fueled by religious supremacy instead of secular fascism.

Current reports indicate a surge in sectarian violence targeting religious minorities in Syria, specifically Christians and Druzes. These groups have existed in the region for centuries, often facing waves of persecution. Now, once again, they’re being targeted by new regime sympathizers who see theological differences as crimes deserving of death rather than opportunities for pluralism.

It’s essential to differentiate between Islam and Islamism. Islamism is a political doctrine that seeks to impose a strict theocratic version of Islam. This perspective aims to establish Sharia law not just as personal guidance but as a governing authority over every aspect of life. Adherents view citizens’ rights as derived from their interpretations of Islam, rather than universal human rights. Their political motivations portray dissent as heresy, disguising a totalitarian ideology as a divine mandate.

Over the years, proponents of militant Islamism have mistaken their cause for a struggle against tyranny. They assert they fight for freedom, justice, and democracy. However, it’s important to recognize that the current Islamist leaders mirror the oppressive tactics used by Assad. While their rhetoric might differ, their end goals remain the same—absolute control achieved through fear, violence, and oppression.

When Assad resorts to torture and chemical weapons, Islamists wield religious identities as weapons. Both factions use sectarianism to eliminate opposition, claiming to uphold “God’s Truth” to justify their actions.

The consequences are grim: a landscape strewn with bodies, families destroyed, and a bleak future devoid of hope for freedom.

At the core of this conflict is a principle vital to American values and increasingly jeopardized globally: the freedom of religion. This isn’t merely another right among others; it serves as the foundation for all other freedoms. As I’ve often said, religious freedom is “first freedom.” When it thrives, society flourishes; when suppressed, other liberties rapidly follow suit.

This is not just an abstract idea. It’s a harsh reality faced by millions. Denying people their freedom to believe or worship indeed leads to the erosion of their freedom to think, speak, and live freely. Syria stands as a tragic example of the fallout resulting from the replacement of religious freedom with ideological authoritarianism, whether secular or theocratic.

We at Clarity Coalition are dedicated to illuminating the dangers posed by political Islam and authoritarian regimes. Our network comprises Muslims, former Muslims, and allies across various ideologies who believe that freedom belongs to all humanity, not just a Western concept. We advocate for the essential truth that dignity and equality before the law are universal rights, and governments have no authority over individual beliefs.

We urge the international community to take action, not only denouncing the recent atrocities in Syria but also demanding thorough investigations into the reported massacres. Holding the Damascus government accountable for their treatment of all citizens, especially minorities, is crucial.

It is important to refrain from recognizing or supporting any administration complicit in such crimes. Moreover, it is vital to regard Islamism for what it truly is—a dangerous political ideology rather than a legitimate representation of faith.

In 2013, the actions of the Obama administration inadvertently paved the way for a return to military rule under Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Egypt. With its complex religious diversity, Syria holds potential as a bulwark against dual fascism.

This requires us to stand in solidarity with the Syrian populace: Christians, Druzes, Sunnis, Shia, Alawis, Kurds, atheists—everyone who desires to coexist in peace and worship freely.

President Donald Trump should demand full accountability and transparency from Damascus regarding Sharaa’s treatment of minorities and his responsibility in safeguarding religious freedoms within his jurisdiction.

The Syrian people deserve better than the bleak choices presented by Assad and his regime. They merit a future that’s anchored in freedom and dignity, not marked by sectarian strife and violence.

The world has overlooked Syria before, and the repercussions have been devastating. We cannot afford to turn a blind eye again.
