Bengals sign Desmond Ridder to strengthen backup options for Joe Burrow

Desmond Ridder, who previously starred in Atlanta, has signed with the Bengals to provide additional support to Joe Burrow.

The Cincinnati Bengals confirmed Ridder’s signing on Sunday, enhancing their quarterback lineup, which also includes Jake Browning and Payton Thorne.

Turning 26 just before the season began, Ridder brings a blend of backup experience along with his starting history.

After being chosen by the Falcons in the third round of the 2022 draft, he started 18 games. In 2023, his stats included a 64.2 completion percentage, 2,836 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions over 13 games.

Things took a turn for Ridder mid-season while in Atlanta in 2023, as he struggled with turnovers and inconsistent performance, leading the team to consider other quarterbacks, including Kirk Cousins during free agency and Michael Penix Jr. in the 2024 NFL Draft.

During his time with the Raiders in 2024, Ridder participated in six games and made one start, throwing for 458 yards along with two touchdowns and two interceptions, completing 61.2% of his passes.

Ridder’s college career also stands out, particularly his 2021 season at Cincinnati, where he led the team to a 13-1 record and clinched the American Athletic Conference Championship by defeating Houston 35-20. The season, however, concluded with a 27-6 loss to Alabama in the Cotton Bowl Classic.

He recorded 3,334 passing yards that year, with 30 touchdowns and eight interceptions, completing 64.9% of his attempts.

However, not everything is seamless for the Bengals, as rookie first-round pick Shemar Stewart remains unsigned due to contract negotiations.

Veterans are set to report for NFL training camp on July 22. Additionally, star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson is reportedly pushing for a long-term deal.
