WNBA All-Star Game Sparks Controversy Over Comments
During the WNBA All-Star Game, ESPN host Elle Duncan made some remarks that raised eyebrows regarding the game’s offensive style. While it’s common for All-Star games to lack in defensive intensity, Duncan’s halftime commentary stood out for its peculiar analogy.
“I hope there’s a bit more competition,” Duncan expressed after witnessing Nafisa Collier’s team racking up 82 points against Caitlyn Clark’s 60 in the first half. She likened the experience to “a girl’s trip to Cancun,” adding a humorous twist by saying she “doesn’t have a D now.”
Right after her comment, fellow ESPN analyst Chiney Ogwumike responded, saying, “Elle, you’re timed out. You’re done,” as the broadcast transitioned to commercials. This quip didn’t sit well with many viewers on social media, some of whom criticized Duncan’s sense of humor.
In a notable backlash, one commenter expressed frustration, stating, “Please add this to a long list of reasons why no one takes @wnba or @espn seriously.” Others echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that if a male comedian had said something similar, he would likely face cancellations.
Meanwhile, the game itself continued with Collier’s team leading by 36 points, ultimately winning 151-131 against Clark’s squad. Clark, unfortunately, did not play due to ongoing injuries, having struggled with a groin issue earlier in the season.
The WNBA season resumes after this weekend’s All-Star Festival, leaving fans to wonder how the league will navigate these mixed public reactions.
