Kansas City Chiefs Receiver Laci Rice Returns to Training Camp

Laci Rice, the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver, is set to participate fully in training camp despite a recent 30-day prison sentence resulting from a serious car accident in Dallas last year. This incident led to his own injuries, and it has certainly put a lot on his plate.

Chiefs Coach Andy Reid noted that Rice, who showcased impressive skills during his rookie season in 2023, will be active throughout training camp. However, he hasn’t specified whether Rice will be fully engaged once the regular season kicks off.

Reid mentioned that the NFL hasn’t yet communicated any specific disciplinary measures regarding Rice’s case. The team is currently focused on preparing everyone else for the upcoming season. It seems like the Chiefs are trying to manage the situation as smoothly as possible.

“We’ll proceed with him as we normally would,” said Reid. “He’ll take all the usual reps, and we’ll adjust depending on how things unfold.” There’s also a rotating system for players in that position, which I guess helps keep everyone on their toes.

In March 2024, Rice was heavily involved in a crash, which led to him pleading guilty to two felony counts related to racing on the highway. He received five years of deferred probation and that 30-day jail term was part of the agreement.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s office revealed that Rice is responsible for covering about $115,000 in expenses for the crash victim. Reports indicated he was speeding—around 119 mph—when he collided with another vehicle, causing a multi-car accident. To make matters worse, Rice reportedly fled the scene on foot.

After the accident, Rice publicly expressed remorse, stating, “I understand my role in this situation.” He mentioned he has struggled with his actions and is committed to making amends.

As the legal proceedings wrap up, it’s expected that the NFL will conduct its own investigation to determine any further actions concerning Rice as he approaches his third season in the league.

His previous season had shown such promise. In 2024, Rice recorded 24 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns across just three games. Unfortunately, he faced a setback when he injured his LCL in week four while attempting a tackle following a Patrick Mahomes interception against the Los Angeles Chargers.

However, Reid has indicated that Rice has since made a full recovery and is actively participating in offseason activities. Although he’s gearing up for the 2025 season, there’s still the shadow of possible NFL discipline looming over him until they make a decision. Let’s see how things unfold from here.
