Homeland Security Secretary Visits Site of Deadly Shootout
On Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem visited the scene of a tragic shooting in New York City that left a customs border guard dead over the weekend during an attempted robbery. This incident involved individuals previously known to be undocumented immigrants, and Noem condemned the sanctuary policies contributing to such events.
The incident occurred Saturday night at Riverside Park in Manhattan, where a non-service officer was reportedly assaulted. A Dominican national, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, who had been captured by the border patrol in April 2023, was arrested following the shooting.
Noem expressed her outrage, stating, “There’s absolutely zero reason why people like this should be allowed to roam the streets of New York City.” She highlighted that Nunez had been arrested multiple times in the city, suggesting that the mayor’s policies allowed him to remain free and pose a threat to public safety.
Additional suspects in the shooting were also said to be illegally in the country, and Noem indicated that one of them would face strong prosecution for their involvement in the crime.
Witnesses described the attempted robbery, where victims were seated by the water when the assailants—on scooters—approached with firearms. The border patrol officer was shot in the arm and cheek, but fortunately, he is recovering in stable condition.
After meeting with officers, Noem reassured them of her support: “Our hearts and prayers are with the officers and the community affected by this tragedy.” She urged mayors and governors of sanctuary cities to revise their policies in order to protect public safety more effectively.
She further commented on the need for a community where families can pursue their dreams safely. “We see the consequences of insufficient policy in cities across the country,” she reflected, referencing challenges faced in other jurisdictions.
Nunez, who was injured in the altercation, is currently hospitalized. After being arrested at the Arizona border and released under Biden’s administration, he now faces an aggressive deportation order and has a criminal history that includes charges in Massachusetts.
New York Mayor Eric Adams described Nunez as having been arrested multiple times prior to this incident, expressing concerns over his history of violence and ongoing legal issues.
Former President Donald Trump weighed in, emphasizing the severity of the shooting and criticizing policies that allowed Nunez to remain in the country.
Despite his injuries, the border patrol officer exhibited bravery and resilience during the shocking encounter, a testament to the challenges faced in upholding safety and security.
