Bessent criticizes ‘leakers’ following report about Powell's advice

Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent expressed frustration over a recent leaker, referencing a report from The Wall Street Journal that discussed President Trump’s comments. Trump himself criticized the report on Sunday.

During a CNBC interview on Monday, Bescent was questioned about the authenticity of the Journal’s claims and his conversations with Trump regarding Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s potential firing.

“The issue with this story is the identity of the leaker is unknown, which means the information shared is likely incomplete. Furthermore, publications like the Wall Street Journal may not fully understand how a high-performance executive president operates,” Bescent remarked.

He elaborated, “They’re used to leadership styles, like Obama’s, who may not have had the same economic acuity as Biden or Trump. The thing about Trump is he gathers input from various perspectives before making decisions.”

Meanwhile, Trump reportedly filed a lawsuit related to a piece that covered a letter sent by the Journal to the late Jeffrey Epstein on his 50th birthday, claiming the article tarnished his reputation.

Trump has been openly critical of Powell’s management of interest rates and had hinted to GOP lawmakers about possibly firing him in the near future, only to reverse course with further comments last week.

When pressed on whether Trump would dissuade Powell from a potential firing, Bescent simply stated, “I think we need to evaluate the entire Federal Reserve system and its effectiveness.”

Bescent noted, “I will be attending a regulatory meeting tonight, where I’ll be the keynote speaker discussing regulations. The Fed’s role encompasses financial policy, regulatory measures, and overall financial stability. Do you think the organization is fulfilling its mission?”

Trump responded to the report on Sunday, saying, “Without me, the market wouldn’t be at such record highs; it might have crashed! So get your facts straight. I will explain things as needed.” The President emphasized his view during a social event.
