Immigration Agents Arrest Man Accused of Concealing Body

Immigration agents have apprehended a man suspected of hiding the body of an Illinois woman on his property months after she died from a drug overdose.

On Saturday, the Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) took Luis Mendoza Gonzalez, a 52-year-old Mexican national living in the U.S., into custody. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement outlining that Mendoza Gonzalez was charged with concealing the body of Megan Boss, which he allegedly kept in a storage container in his garden and mistreated, while also facing charges of obstructing justice.

“ICE is working to protect Americans by arresting individuals like Luis Mendoza Gonzalez, who have committed serious crimes,” stated DHS Deputy Chief Tricia McLaughlin. She described the situation as deeply troubling, highlighting the alleged actions of Mendoza Gonzalez.

Megan Boss was reported missing in March by her family, prompting the Antioch Police Department to seek public assistance. Mendoza Gonzalez was arrested in April.

According to Mendoza Gonzalez, Boss consumed an unknown drug and was with him in his basement on February 19. He claimed he went upstairs to fix a leak and, upon returning, found her dead from an apparent overdose. Fearing repercussions, he left her body wrapped in a blanket in the basement for days before disposing of it, according to reports.

Law enforcement eventually discovered her body, which was found in a bleach storage container. Although an autopsy indicated her likely cause of death was a fentanyl overdose, controversy arose over claims that the body had been beheaded, a statement rejected by Boss’s mother and local authorities.

Despite the severity of the allegations, a Lake County judge released Mendoza Gonzalez after his court appearance. The charges he faces are classified as class 4 felonies, and under Illinois’ Safe-T Act, they do not meet the criteria for sustainable charges.

The Safe-T Act, passed in 2021 by Governor JB Pritzker and supported by other reforms in the justice system, has drawn criticism, particularly regarding its implications for bail and law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Critics of the decision, including those from the Trump administration, expressed outrage at the judge’s choice to release Mendoza Gonzalez shortly after his arrest, referring to it as unacceptable.

Jennifer Boss, Megans’s mother, expressed relief at the arrest, stating her gratitude for the actions taken by the immigration agents.

As of now, Mendoza Gonzalez is being held at Lake County Jail in Waukegan, Illinois.
