American Express Reports Q2 Results for 2025

American Express (AMEX) announced a net profit of $3.010 million for the second quarter of 2025, marking a 4% decline compared to the previous year.

The company’s earnings per share (EPS) dropped 2% to $4.08.

For the quarter ending June 30, 2025, AMEX’s consolidated gross net interest income rose to $17.855 billion, reflecting a 9% year-over-year increase.

Officials at the US-based firm attribute this growth to a rise in cardholder spending. There was also an increase in revolving loan balances, which contributed to greater card fee revenue.

However, trends in credit loss provisions showed a different pattern. AMEX’s provisions increased from $1.3 billion to $1.4 billion, driven by higher net reserve builds and increased net amortization linked to the growth in total loans and cardholder receivables.

In the first half of 2025, AMEX posted a net profit of $5.46 billion, slightly up from $5.45 billion last year.

Nonetheless, diluted EPS saw a small increase of 3% to $7.71, while half-yearly revenue also grew by 8%, reaching $34.82 billion.

Stephen Squeri, AMEX’s Chairman and CEO, expressed a commitment to offering valuable opportunities. He noted that this quarter saw record spending from card members, robust demand for premium products, and continued strong credit performance.

Squeri also mentioned upcoming updates to Platinum Cards for US consumers and businesses this fall, expressing confidence in maintaining leadership in the premium sector. By leveraging a unique membership model and refreshing products, he believes there’s significant potential for growth ahead.

This year, American Express acquired Center, a firm focused on expense management software. The deal, which was approved by regulators in April, aims to enhance AMEX’s offerings by integrating Center’s solutions with existing business card products.
