New Drama “The Hunting Wives” Explores Intrigue Among Texas Socialites

There’s a fresh soap opera making waves titled “The Hunting Wives.” It dives into the lives of affluent housewives, complete with themes of gender dynamics and murder.

Malin Akerman, well-known for her work on Netflix’s “The Hunting Wives,” stars in this adaptation of a 2021 novel. The story follows Sophie (Brittany Snow), who moves from Massachusetts to Texas with her husband (Evan Jonigkeit).

Struggling to adjust, Sophie finds herself entangled in a complex relationship with Margo Banks (Akerman), the wife of her husband’s boss, Jed (Dermot Mulroney). He’s contemplating a run for governor in Texas. Margo leads the local elite social circle, which adds to the drama.

Akerman, 47, shared her excitement, stating, “I love this kind of role. I’m just a big, free, wild woman.”

The show captures a cheeky vibe, with Akerman noting, “I like to keep myself separate from who I am in real life.” Margo and Jed have an open marriage that allows her to explore romantic connections with younger individuals, including high school student Brad (George Ferrier) and his friend Curry (Jaime Ray Newman). Eventually, Margo turns her attention to Sophie, creating more tension.

Things take a darker turn when Sophie finds herself restrained by a group of party-loving friends of Margot’s. Margo is fond of guns, which adds an intriguing layer to the plot.

When discussing the show’s more risqué moments, Akerman remarked, “I’ve done it in the past, but the scenes need to advance the story.” She believes that what Margo’s character requires is genuine depth, not just gratuitous scenes.

The “Watchmen” actress acknowledged the importance of their “great intimate coordinator” during filming. “Before filming, we rehearsed the scenes, discussing comfort levels, which helps avoid surprises on set,” she explained. “It’s very technical, but I hope the final product feels sexy and captivating for viewers.”

As the relationship between Margo and Sophie heats up, Akerman described the atmosphere on set as “playful.” She added, “Brittany and I have great chemistry. It’s such a unique job, and it’s fantastic to work alongside her.” They quickly formed a solid friendship, which is a relief when working with someone new.

She emphasized that it was a respectful environment on set, safeguarded by the intimate coordinator and the entire crew’s professionalism.

Akerman elaborated on the complexity of Margo and Sophie’s relationship: “They fulfill each other’s needs in various ways, although their desires might not be clear until later.”

Margo is drawn to Sophie because she is intelligent, funny, and different from the other women in her circle. “Sophie is like a shiny new toy—Margo is curious and adventurous enough to explore this connection, shifting from where it begins to somewhere unexpected,” Akerman noted.

In addition to “Hunting Wives,” Akerman is recognized for her roles in “Rock of Ages,” “Watchmen,” and “27 Dresses.” She even shared her thoughts on a potential sequel, joking, “I love the idea of ’28 Dresses’!”
