Custody Battle Takes Dark Turn with Allegations of Child Abduction

A high-profile custody battle has taken a troubling twist, involving the heir to a prominent German restaurant chain and her sports commentator partner. Christina Block and her boyfriend allegedly recruited Israeli operatives to abduct two young children from Denmark, which is part of her ongoing dispute with her ex-husband.

Block, part of the family that founded the well-known steakhouse chain Blockhouse, is currently on trial in Hamburg, facing serious charges including aggravated child abduction and illegal detention. The trial has drawn considerable media attention in Germany, captivating the public with the dramatic details surrounding the case.

On January 1, 2024, the children, Clara, 13, and Theodor, 10, were at a family gathering near the German border when the abduction occurred. Reports indicate that Block’s ex-husband, Stephen Hensel, was confronted at his home by a group of men who overpowered him and forcibly took his children away through the woods and across a stream.

The children, it’s claimed, were terrified to the point of silence, with one reportedly tied up and threatened with death if they made a sound. According to German authorities, the children were hidden in a location several hundred miles away before being taken to Block’s residence in Hamburg just a day later.

After a few days of being out of contact, the children were ultimately returned to Danish authorities, who had been alerted by Hensel when he managed to report the kids missing.

Block’s defense incorporates claims that her partner, Gerhard Delling, a former sports commentator, supported her actions, while August Hanning, a former head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Agency, is also facing charges related to the incident. Prosecutors allege that Hanning was integral in facilitating communication between Block and the hired operatives.

Block has denied the allegations but indicated that her mother had previously contributed large sums to an Israeli intelligence firm to help with matters involving the children, suggesting a well-planned scheme. However, she refutes claims that she conspired to frame Hensel with fake child pornography.

In her defense, Block asserts that her desperation grew after Hensel allegedly refused to return their children during a scheduled visit in 2021, despite a German court awarding her sole custody. Following the abduction, German police returned the children to Denmark, but Danish officials rejected the German custody ruling, stating that the children wished to avoid contact with their mother.

Block’s legal team aims to demonstrate that she is acting to protect herself and her children from potential harm posed by Hensel. Meanwhile, Hensel retains custody of the children, who now live at an undisclosed location in Denmark, reportedly under new identities.

The court sessions are anticipated to continue until Christmas, with a significant number of witnesses and experts expected to testify. During the initial days of the trial, both parents were physically close in the courtroom but did not interact.

Interestingly, their daughter, now 14, has expressed interest in sharing her testimony. However, hearings were postponed due to concerns over whether children should be allowed to testify, particularly in light of parallel legal proceedings involving Hensel.

This intense family drama isn’t just personal; it also highlights the emotional turmoil within Block’s family, especially with her father, Eugen Block, who has openly shared his distress about the situation, lamenting that he hasn’t seen his grandchildren in years and that the whole custody issue has brought him considerable pain.
