The Kremlin is steadfast in its war demands, even as President Trump has issued a new warning about potential sanctions if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine within 50 days.
“Russia is prepared to act swiftly. Our main priority is achieving our objectives. These objectives are clear and consistent. However, the outcome isn’t solely in our control,” he expressed in an interview with Tass, the Russian state news agency.
On July 14, Trump cautioned that Russia has 50 days to accept the ceasefire deal. If not, he indicated a readiness to impose complete economic sanctions on countries engaged in business with Russia.
This warning coincided with Trump’s announcement of a contract with NATO to supply arms to Ukraine.
In recent weeks, Trump has voiced his frustration with Putin, especially as missile strikes against Ukraine persist despite calls from the White House for a ceasefire.
The White House has reiterated its stance in response to comments made by Peskov.
“The ongoing and brutal war between Russia and Ukraine is a consequence of Joe Biden’s ineptitude, and it has dragged on for far too long,” stated White House spokesperson Anna Kelly.
“President Trump aims to halt the violence, and if there is no agreement on a ceasefire, he is proceeding with selling American-made weapons to NATO allies and imposing tariffs and sanctions on Putin,” Kelly remarked.
Peskov also mentioned that Putin intends to visit Beijing in September and did not dismiss the prospect of a meeting with Trump if he decides to attend.
At that moment, the White House did not confirm any plans for Trump’s visit to China.
“We are preparing for a trip to Beijing,” Peskov said. “This is definitely on the agenda for the head of state, but I haven’t been informed that President Trump will also be traveling to Beijing.”
“If he happens to be there, it could lead to discussions about whether a meeting would be appropriate,” Peskov added.
Putin’s trip to Beijing is intended to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II. China is planning to host a parade on September 3, just after Trump’s 50-day deadline concludes.
