Upcoming Film on Tolkien and Lewis’ Friendship
New information is surfacing about films that will explore the friendship between J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, the authors behind two of the 20th century’s most beloved fantasy worlds. The project, titled Fellowship, was announced last year by Angel Studios as part of their film slate featuring The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia.
Paul Silstad, a London-based filmmaker, is at the helm of this project. He is known for the recent series from Angel Studios.
According to Silstad, the script focuses on how crucial their friendship was in shaping their iconic literary creations. He expressed that if either of them hadn’t supported the other, it’s possible neither would have completed their most significant work.
“The beautiful premise of that is that if they hadn’t been with each other, neither would have completed their biggest piece,” Silstad mentioned. “Lewis was convinced of Christianity by Tolkien, and without that influence, we wouldn’t have had something as remarkable as Narnia. On the flip side, Tolkien was keen on finalizing his own works, which could have resulted in a dead end. But Lewis was profoundly impacted by him, pulling everything together into a cohesive narrative like The Lord of the Rings. So, really, if one of them hadn’t succeeded, their masterpieces wouldn’t have blessed the world,” he said.
Lewis passed away in 1963 while Tolkien continued writing until 1973. Yet, their legacies endure—not only through their novels but also through various modern adaptations.
Silstad remarked that a central theme in Fellowship explores the idea that friendship is never in vain.
Angel Studios describes the film as “a testament to the power of friendship, imagination, and storytelling that evokes human hope.”
“In an age where facts feel fleeting, Fellowship provides something refreshing. A narrative grounded in authenticity, courage, and connections that uplift us,” the studio states in the film’s summary.
As of now, there isn’t a set release date for the film.
