The Ontario Beer League Team Earns Lifelong Bragging Rights
Last Wednesday night turned into a memorable evening for hockey fans in Newmarket, Ontario, as NHL superstars Conor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl hit the ice in pickup game jerseys. It was a moment that many in the community had only dreamed of.
Interestingly, the superstars didn’t score any goals during the game, but their teammates secured a convincing 6-2 win. It wasn’t about the scores; it was more about the experience of having these renowned players nearby.
Though McDavid and Draisaitl didn’t skate at full speed, the local goalie stood out, making some impressive saves, particularly against McDavid, who wore the number 97 jersey.
Every time either star touched the puck, the crowd in the stands reacted with awe, and clips of the event quickly spread across social media. One viewer on X commented, “Imagine being that goalkeeper. Legend forever,” while another added, “Edmonton should sign that goalie; he looks better than [Oilers starter] Skinner.” I mean, it kind of makes you think about how quickly opinions can change, right?
Another fan quipped, “How do I buy a beer from that goalkeeper?” It’s funny how even lighthearted comments can capture the atmosphere of a special event.
The game was held not far from McDavid’s hometown of Richmond Hill, Ontario. Reflecting on the experience, McDavid noted, “This is a league I played in with my friends for over a decade. We were back in this league during junior hockey, and I was a bit surprised to see it become so popular.” Over the years, he had participated in similar games, but the sudden attention was amusing.
The Oilers are coming off two straight losses to the Panthers in the Stanley Cup final, as McDavid, Draisaitl, and the team set their sights on another chance in the Cup next season. However, McDavid’s future with Edmonton hangs in the balance—he’s eligible for an extension this summer and could potentially become a free agent after next season.
