Buttigieg’s DEI Spending Sparks Criticism

Pete Buttigieg’s aspirations for higher office are under increased scrutiny regarding his record as Secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOT) under the Biden administration. Critics note a stark focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, while vital upgrades to outdated air traffic control systems have stagnated.

The DOT has granted tens of millions for promoting DEI, despite delaying necessary improvements to air traffic control technologies. A recent report highlights these discrepancies, drawing on insights from aviation industry insiders and government spending records.

Reportedly, in a rather troubling conversation with aviation executives, Buttigieg asserted that upgrading the air traffic system would allow more planes in the air but wouldn’t particularly benefit him. This perspective raises eyebrows among many. An industry official remarked, “He was definitely pushing the agenda.”

Another aviation insider pointed out that Buttigieg seemed reluctant to acknowledge a shortage of air traffic controllers, avoiding any correlation with delays or cancellations. “In the beginning, he didn’t want to admit that controllers were in short supply,” the source noted.

However, Buttigieg was often found defending the DEI policies against critics who argued that such focus was compromising public safety. Instead, he appears to have shifted blame for delays onto airlines, seemingly ignoring the upgrades his department needed.

A spokesperson for Buttigieg, responding to the report, claimed its accuracy was questionable. He emphasized the efforts being made on software upgrades that, according to him, aim to enhance operational efficiency and reduce flight times. Additionally, traffic controller staffing has increased during Buttigieg’s tenure.

Chris Meagher, Buttigieg’s representative, called it “ridiculous” to insinuate he neglected air traffic control modernization. He stated, “The focus has always been on safety—not just aviation, but on roads and bridges, where nearly 40,000 Americans die each year.” He insists that addressing air traffic control is a priority.

Despite defending DEI funding, Meagher maintains that resources for the DOT have been allocated independently from other agencies like the FAA. His comment reflects the complexity of separately managed budgets and programs within the transportation sector.

The concerns surrounding Buttigieg’s leadership echo sentiments previously highlighted in documentaries produced by other media, warning that incompetency in the transport sector could lead to dire consequences.

Interestingly, some argue that the previous administration had laid out an opportunity to significantly enhance transportation by allocating a $12.5 billion boost for the FAA system. Meanwhile, the ongoing focus on DEI might inadvertently cost more than just financial resources.
