Trump’s Approval Ratings and Consequences
As President Trump reaches the six-month mark of his second term, approval ratings seem remarkably low. Many Americans are increasingly dissatisfied with his performance, attributing his declining support to a range of factors, including perceived incompetence, harsh policies, and a style of governance that many see as authoritarian.
According to recent polling data from RealClearPolitics, spanning from July 6 to July 20, only around 45.5% of Americans endorse Trump’s overall job performance, while a striking 52.1% disapprove. This trend reflects a grim historical context—only a handful of presidents, such as Truman and Biden, have had similarly low ratings.
If this downward trajectory continues, we might witness a shift among Congressional Republicans, who could start distancing themselves from Trump. These lawmakers, who should ideally uphold their responsibilities to the American public, often appear to follow the President’s lead, supporting many of his questionable policies without much deliberation.
However, it’s crucial for these representatives to remember their primary duty: serving the best interests of the country. A more responsible approach could lead to better outcomes for their constituents, similar to what we expect from Democrats when they occupy the White House.
Regrettably, many Republicans who currently dominate Congress seem to have relinquished their constitutional responsibilities. They’re failing to act as a necessary check on Trump’s unchecked power.
Moreover, there’s a sentiment growing that Trump’s administration has inflicted more harm than any previous presidency. While Russia’s President Putin might not have initiated a nuclear strike on the U.S., the damage done by Trump in just six months of his second term is arguably substantial.
Trump’s policies, particularly those regarding federal employment, have led to significant reductions in the workforce. Around 100,000 civil servants are facing layoffs or forced resignations due to cutbacks. Essential departments, including Education and Health Services, struggle to maintain operations with dwindling resources.
Cuts to critical medical research and disaster response capabilities are alarming. For instance, reductions in funding for programs tackling cancer and other severe illnesses are expected to have dire consequences. Additionally, the ability to provide timely responses to natural disasters, like floods, has been compromised. Furthermore, many countries suffer from a shortage of food and medical aid from the U.S.
Trump’s cuts have also impacted educational institutions, leaving schools without necessary resources and federal funding for public broadcasters like PBS and NPR eliminated.
There’s a troubling trend of detaining immigrants who have entered the U.S. without legal permission, jeopardizing vital work sectors like agriculture and construction. The tariffs imposed by Trump have affected prices for goods and everyday items, impacting families across the nation.
Concerns about potential healthcare cuts loom large, with estimates suggesting as many as 17 million Americans could lose health insurance under Trump’s proposed plans, alongside possible rural hospital closures leading to preventable health issues and fatalities.
But perhaps there’s a flicker of hope, with some Congressional Republicans beginning to stand up against Trump’s policies—especially those linked to his activities with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender.
There’s mounting pressure for the Trump administration to reveal investigative files related to Epstein. Even some of Trump’s staunch allies are urging this release, despite Trump’s objections, which he claims are politically motivated.
In a twist, Trump has expressed that if he were not in office, he would support releasing these files. Yet, he recently backed his attorney’s decision against publication, creating a contradiction that some are taking note of.
As this situation unfolds, we might be on the brink of a significant shift regarding Trump’s influence and approval ratings. It remains to be seen whether these emerging tensions will prompt Congressional Republicans to fulfill their duties authentically, stepping away from fear and towards genuine public service.
