Zelensky Advocates for Peace Discussions with Putin Amid Ongoing Russian Attacks

Kiev, Ukraine

Ukrainian President Voldy Milzelensky has revised his offer to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to negotiate a resolution to the ongoing conflict. However, optimism for significant progress remains low as both sides prepare for face-to-face meetings.

In the meantime, night assaults by Russian forces on four cities in Ukraine resulted in casualties, including the death of a child, according to local officials.

Putin has previously dismissed Zelensky’s proposals for in-person discussions to address the largest conflict in Europe since World War II. Ukrainian officials contend that the lower-level delegation expected to meet in Istanbul later this week lacks the necessary political influence to bring an end to the hostilities. The demands from both sides to cease Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began on February 24, 2022, appear to be distant.

Zelensky expressed on Telegram that, “Ukraine never wanted this war. It was Russia that initiated it.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov mentioned that much work was needed before considering a high-level meeting, but did not specify a date for the Istanbul discussions.

Western and Ukrainian officials have criticized the Kremlin for stalling negotiations as Russian troops occupy more Ukrainian territory. Currently, Russia controls about 20% of Ukraine.

Despite the announcement of Zelensky’s proposal to negotiate, expectations for progress are dim. This comes even as efforts by the administration to advocate for a gradual peace process seem to falter, given Putin’s steadfast demands.

Peskov stated, “There is no reason to expect a magical breakthrough. It’s almost impossible under the current circumstances.”

The previous two rounds of talks occurred in Istanbul, and reports suggest Turkish cities will host the upcoming discussions. Past consultations in May and June resulted in exchanges of prisoners of war but did not lead to additional agreements.

Meanwhile, Russia continues to intensify its assaults along a lengthy frontline, launching over 700 drones each night targeting Ukrainian cities.

During his upcoming speech in Istanbul, Zelensky will highlight Ukraine’s desire to facilitate the release of more prisoners from Russian custody amidst allegations of unfairness in the return process.

The Ukrainian delegation, led by former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, includes members from various government departments and agencies.

Peskov acknowledged the intricacies of achieving reconciliation in Ukraine, noting that even securing agreements on prisoner exchanges has proven challenging.

Russian attacks have claimed lives in four Ukrainian cities overnight, injuring at least 41 others. The bombardment began on Monday evening, affecting areas such as the Smie region, Odesa, and Kramatorsk.

In Kramatorsk, a glide bomb hit an apartment building and ignited a fire, confirming the death of a young boy. Local officials reported injuries to five others.

The Sumy region faced waves of assaults, including drone strikes that targeted a gas station, injuring several individuals, including a five-year-old. Additional bombings in Sumy City inflicted injuries on 13 people, with multiple residential and commercial buildings sustaining damage.

Separately, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced it had intercepted 35 long-range Ukrainian drones overnight.
