New York Representative Andrew Garbarino will head the House Homeland Security Committee.

Rep. Andrew Garbarino, a Republican from Long Island, is poised to take over as chair of the influential House Homeland Security Committee.

During a recent committee vote, he received support from South Shore representatives including MPs Michael Guest (R-Miss.), Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.), and Clay Higgins (R-La.), who are responsible for overseeing various national security matters.

“As someone who has lived my entire life in New York and represents a district that was profoundly affected by 9/11, I truly grasp the significance of this role. ‘Never forget’ isn’t just a phrase for me,” Garbarino commented in a statement. “It’s a promise I’ve carried throughout my adult life and will continue to guide my efforts.”

He emphasized, “There’s crucial work ahead of us. Securing our borders, combating terrorism, enhancing cybersecurity, and fortifying national defense are all vital for the safety of Americans.”

Garbarino is stepping into the role previously held by Mark Green (R-Tenn.), who resigned from the House. This marks a narrow moment for the GOP in the lower chamber.

Green’s resignation came after he supported a significant piece of legislation during President Trump’s tenure, reportedly in connection with business opportunities in Guyana.

The former representative had made headlines in September when he accused his wife of infidelity and filed for divorce, although she later contested his claims regarding the woman he alleged was involved.

Garbarino was first elected to the House in 2020 and made headlines in May for sneaking in a lengthy session to discuss the early stages of a major legislative proposal.

His confirmation will next go to the House Republican Conference, a step that typically advances endorsements from the steering panel for further approval.

Since 2023, Garbarino has chaired the subcommittee focused on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection and has previous experience as a manager at the former Department of Homeland Security under Alejandro Mayorkas, where he endured attempts by the GOP-led House to sideline him.
