Early Film 'What If?' by Dallas Jenkins Comes Back to Theaters for Its 15th Anniversary

Before Dallas Jenkins became known for his work on I Was Chosen, he was behind a different project—What If? This film has drawn comparisons to It’s a Wonderful Life and, while it didn’t gain worldwide recognition, it was well-loved by its cast and crew. Lead actor Kevin Sorbo counts it among his top three favorites of all time.

“I’ve made over 90 films, and this one is right up there,” Sorbo shares.

The narrative follows a man who abandons his faith in pursuit of career success, prompting a look into an alternate life he could have had. Sorbo stars as Ben Walker, alongside John Ratzenberger, who plays an angel, and a supporting cast that includes Christie Swanson, Christine Minter, Debbie Ryan, and Sterio Savante.

As it marks its 15th anniversary, What If? (PG) will make its return to theaters on August 5th and 7th, featuring special conversations with the cast.

“I’m talking about it 15 years later,” Sorbo remarked.

The plot of the film touches on timeless themes of faith and purpose. Sorbo believes it’s more pertinent today than ever.

“I hope viewers feel a sense of hope; we really need it. The world feels chaotic, but this film has humor, love—everything that seems to be missing these days,” he noted.

Jenkins initially shared the script with Sorbo for input. Sorbo was immediately attracted to the story and the role of Ben.

“I asked, ‘Who’s playing Ben?’ He mentioned a few names, and I said, ‘No way, I’m taking that part myself.’ He replied, ‘I can’t afford you,’” Sorbo laughed.

Nonetheless, Sorbo encouraged Jenkins to cast him as the lead despite other actors being considered. He recalls Jenkins as an enthusiastic and detail-oriented filmmaker.

“Dallas assembled a fantastic team and was incredibly organized, ready to shoot exactly how he envisioned,” Sorbo stated.

Jenkins himself described the film as “one of my favorite projects”, suggesting it has become somewhat of a cult classic.

In a world often marked by division and animosity, What If? serves as a reminder of faith and purpose for many, according to Sorbo.

“I hope this movie encourages people to live better lives, to find more meaningful paths,” he concluded.
