Coca-Cola to Launch New Cane Sugar Version

Coca-Cola recently announced plans to introduce a new version of its soft drink, using cane sugar instead of corn syrup. This comes just days after former President Trump mentioned on social media that he was in talks with the company regarding this change.

The Atlanta-based company stated that this new product will be part of its ongoing innovation strategy and is set to launch this fall in the U.S. They emphasized that cola made with U.S. cane sugar is intended to complement their current offerings.

Typically, Coca-Cola sold in America is sweetened with corn syrup, while cane sugar is used in other nations, such as Mexico and various European countries.

Trump’s statement hinted at a positive reception, claiming that this change could be beneficial. He has been known to favor diet cola in the past. Interestingly, Coca-Cola had initially downplayed his remarks, acknowledging his fondness for the brand but noting that more details would be shared later.

In the U.S., Coca-Cola made with cane sugar is often referred to as “Mexican Cola” due to its frequent import from Mexico.

CEO James Quincey discussed these developments during a call with investors, mentioning that cane sugar is already utilized in the company’s tea and other beverages. He expressed optimism that this new offering will resonate with consumers, stating that they are eager to explore various sweetener options based on consumer preferences.

However, experts have raised concerns about whether switching sweeteners will genuinely improve health outcomes. Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist, pointed out that both high fructose corn syrup and cane sugar have similar metabolic impacts and can pose risks for obesity and diabetes.

Moreover, the move has received criticism within the agricultural sector. John Board, CEO of the Corn Refiners Association, argued that replacing corn syrup with cane sugar could negatively affect American jobs and increase foreign sugar imports. He noted that while domestic cane sugar primarily comes from a few states, it only constitutes a portion of the overall sugar supply in the U.S.

Trump has had a long-standing relationship with Coca-Cola, even joking in 2012 about the company’s response to him. He previously shared his preference for diet cola and even received a custom bottle from Quincey during a visit to Mar-a-Lago in January.

A White House spokesperson mentioned that the administration aims to collaborate with food and beverage companies to promote healthier options for Americans. The situation continues to develop, and requests for comments have been sent to various parties involved.
