Jim Parsons, known for Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, criticized the Trump administration for cutting “detectives” from the federally funded LGBTQ+ crisis hotline.
This month marked the withdrawal of federal funds for the LGBTQ+ Youth Suicide Hotline, which had been planned since June. With an existing youth suicide prevention hotline, many see the cuts as unnecessary and detrimental to support for LGBTQ youth.
Parsons expressed strong disapproval, labeling the decision as “criminal.” He mentioned, “I think he’s literally a criminal,” during a recent appearance on MSNBC, adding that such a decision seems devoid of justification. “It’s one of those moves where you think, ‘There’s just no good reason for that.’ No matter how you frame it, it’s not valid.”
He remarked, “It feels like it’s harmful and is done just to create a point.”
The Department of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services responded by stating that no one in crisis would be neglected. They emphasized that all who reach out to the 988 Lifeline will have access to trained counselors capable of addressing issues related to suicide and mental health crises.
The hotline was initially established during the Biden administration, championed by Senator Tammy Baldwin from Wisconsin, as a supportive measure for the gay community.
