Collision Involving USS Midway in San Diego
A private 60-foot vessel collided with the USS Midway in San Diego on Friday afternoon. The captain of the boat was arrested for allegedly being under the influence while operating the craft, according to a Harbor Police spokesman.
The accident took place shortly before 2 PM on July 18th, as confirmed by officials. Reports indicate that the boats struck the hull of the USS Midway, leaving visible damage on its side.
This incident caught the attention of onlookers near the well-known “unconditional surrender” statue, which symbolizes the iconic World War II moment of a sailor kissing a nurse. This statue is situated in proximity to the USS Midway.
Authorities reported that numerous witnesses called in to describe the loud impact. “The sound was really startling,” one witness noted. Initially, the fishing boat fled the scene, but Harbor police were able to intercept it near the San Diego Coronado Bridge. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, though the suspect’s boat incurred some minor damage.
Preliminary assessments estimate the damage to the USS Midway at more than $100,000. The identity of the captain has not been revealed, and investigations are ongoing.
