Green Card Holder Faces Deportation Without Denouncing Hamas
Mahmoud Khalil, a green card holder facing deportation under the Trump administration, opted not to explicitly denounce Hamas as a terrorist organization during a CNN interview on Tuesday.
The Trump administration has been scrutinizing Khalil’s legal status as part of a broader effort to target non-citizens who may have supported terrorist groups or engaged in disruptive protests at universities. The State Department claims that Khalil’s involvement in groups opposed to Western civilization and his support for Hamas justify the revocation of his green card.
“Just to clarify, do you condemn Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization, and its actions on October 7th?” CNN host Pamela Brown inquired.
“I condemn the murder of all civilians, and that’s a complete stop,” Khalil began his response.
Brown pressed him, “But do you specifically denounce Hamas?”
“No, I’m quite clear in blaming all civilians,” Khalil stated. “I hold a straightforward position on that. However, it’s misleading to solely blame Hamas for what’s happening to Palestinians now in light of Israel’s actions.”
Brown highlighted the significance of the question, noting that the federal government is using Khalil’s stance as justification for his potential deportation.
“I simply protested the war in Palestine,” he explained. “That’s my duty as a Palestinian and my responsibility as a human being. It’s about asking for an end to the violence in my homeland.”
Wolf Blitzer, the host, wrapped up the interview by condemning anti-Semitism and commending Khalil for wishing well for his family.
In related news, the Department of Homeland Security has responded to a $20 million lawsuit from Khalil against the Trump administration.
