Roy Black, Renowned Miami Defense Attorney, Passes Away at 80

Roy Black, a prominent defense attorney in Miami, well-known for a notable conviction, has died at the age of 80. His legal partner confirmed the news on Tuesday.

Black gained widespread recognition during the 1991 William Kennedy Smith Rape Trial. He represented various high-profile clients, including pop star Justin Bieber and IndyCar driver Helio Castroneves, showcasing a strong track record in court.

His partner, Howard Slebnick, expressed profound sorrow in an email, saying, “For over 30 years, Roy has been my teacher, mentor and friend. The losses I feel are immeasurable, both personally and professionally.”

The Smith trial marked a significant turning point in criminal defense as it was broadcast live on state television, and the identity of the accuser was concealed with a blue dot. Smith, related to the Kennedy family, was charged with assault but was acquitted.

Within the Miami legal community, Black was considered an icon; fellow attorney David O. Marx likened him to NBA great Michael Jordan. Marx commended Black’s unmatched work ethic and legal prowess, underscoring his substantial influence on the field.

Throughout his career, Black also represented clients like Rush Limbaugh and the “Varsity Blues” defendant, as well as Miami police officer William Rozano, who was acquitted in a controversial 1989 shooting incident involving motorcyclists.
