Brittney Griner shares unsettling information regarding her Russian prison cellmate

Britney Griner Opens Up About Life in Russian Detention

Britney Griner has shed light on her past experiences in a Russian detention center, sharing some disturbing details about her time there and her cellmate’s situation. She recently appeared on Cam Newton’s podcast, “Funky Friday,” where she recounted her experiences during incarceration.

In her discussion, Griner noted that inmates weren’t segregated by the crimes they committed. Most of the prisoners were serving sentences for serious offenses, like murder and drug-related crimes. However, one of her early cellmates was there for what Griner described as unsettling reasons.

“I had a cellmate at first. Something felt off,” Griner remarked. “She behaved like a child, which was strange because she was an adult. She even showed signs of self-harm, and we found out she had sold videos of her family online.”

This particular crime, according to Griner, made her cellmate a target for abuse from the other inmates. “It’s really tough in there for someone like her,” Griner explained, emphasizing that such cases often lead to mistreatment. “If you’re in for something like that, yeah, you’ll be tormented. They’d even put out a cigarette on her.” The atmosphere was intense, as Griner revealed her anger about the lack of separation based on the severity of the crimes.

She expressed frustration at not being able to rest properly at night, noting, “I couldn’t sleep because she would sing at odd hours and acted very eccentrically.” Her time in detention was marked by not just external challenges, but by personal conflicts as well.

Reflecting on her emotional state during this difficult time, Griner opened up about a moment of despair when she realized she had forgotten her bags at a Russian airport back in February 2022. “I honestly thought my life was over,” she admitted.

After being sentenced to nine years, Griner served nearly ten months until her release as part of a prisoner exchange. During her time in captivity, she encountered harsh living conditions, saying, “The mattress had a huge blood stain, and I had no soap or toilet paper.”

Since her return to the United States, Griner has gained a new outlook on life, particularly highlighted during her recent participation in various events. “I didn’t even believe I was here,” she shared. The road ahead seems bright for her, as she manages to maintain impressive statistics in her basketball career.

Griner currently averages 10.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game, continually proving her prowess as a nine-time All-Star and a standout player in the league.
