Carlos Narvaez of the Red Sox is penalized for catcher's interference again

Carlos Narvers Ready to Leave Philadelphia After Controversial Game

Carlos Narvers is likely eager to say goodbye to Philadelphia after a puzzling game experience. On Tuesday, the catcher for the Red Sox faced a repeat situation, being called for catcher interference against the Phillies during a 4-1 defeat, just a day after a similar misstep had already impacted his team.

During the first inning, with Brandon Marsh at bat, Bryce Harper tried to swipe home plate. As Red Sox pitcher Richard Fitz threw the ball home, Narvers jumped in front to tag Harper. However, an unusual sequence of events unfolded, resulting in a run for Harper and a scoring adjustment due to two conflicting calls.

According to MLB scoring changes, the field umpire ruled both catcher interference and a balk, which contributed to the chaos. Notably, this isn’t the first time something like this happened; a similar incident occurred last year with the Rays and Marlins, when Miami’s Nick Fortez also faced issues that helped Tampa’s Jose Caballero score.

Yet, back to the Red Sox game, it turned out that the catcher interference was mistakenly credited to the pitcher, allowing the Phillies to gain a 2-0 lead early on.

Reflecting on the incident, Narvers expressed his frustration and responsibility. “I don’t think I was close to the batter,” he noted after the game. “Everything happens so fast. It’s tough. It’s disappointing, and I know I have to improve. I need to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
