Trump Comments on Potential Cooperation with China on Iran
WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump indicated on Tuesday that he believes Chinese President Xi Jinping might be able to help facilitate a deal regarding Iran, though he emphasized that the United States is not reliant on external assistance.
His remarks came during a conversation with reporters on the South Lawn of the White House, ahead of his upcoming trip to Beijing. When asked by Breitbart News if President Xi could support the Iran deal, Trump replied, “He might be able to do it. I mean, he might. To be honest with you, I don’t think they need any help when it comes to Iran. They’ve been defeated militarily, and either they do the right thing or we’re done.”
A White House pool report later noted that Trump was asked by another media outlet about his message to Xi regarding Iran. He stated, “Number one, we’re going to have a long conversation about this. To be honest, I think he’s been a relatively good guy. Look at the blockade. There’s no problem. They’re extracting a lot of oil from that area. We haven’t had any problems.”
He continued, “And he’s a friend of mine. He’s someone we get along with. And I think you can see good things happen. This is going to be a very exciting journey. A lot of good things are going to happen.”
Trump expressed his eagerness for the upcoming visit, noting how he has reshaped America’s economic, military, and diplomatic presence worldwide since taking office in January 2025.
White House press secretary Olivia Wales commented on the administration’s achievements, stating, “President Trump has undoubtedly restored America’s power on the world stage and shown the entire world that the days of weakness during the Biden era are over. He secured important trade deals, resolved eight global conflicts through strength-based peace, and built the world’s greatest military. The results speak for themselves.”
She also added, “Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, the United States is once again respected, and he looks forward to visiting China. We hope this will be a very positive visit that will lay the foundation for many positive outcomes to be achieved between our two countries in the coming years.”
