Roy Black, Notable Miami Defense Attorney, Passes Away at 80

Roy Black, a well-known defense attorney in Miami, died at the age of 80, as confirmed on Tuesday. His clients included figures like Jeffrey Epstein and William Kennedy Smith.

According to the Miami Herald, Black passed away at his home in Coral Gables on Monday.

Howard Slebnick, Black’s legal partner, shared his sentiments in an email to the Associated Press, stating, “For over 30 years, Roy has been my teacher, mentor, and friend. The losses I feel are immeasurable, both personally and professionally.”

Throughout his career, Black represented a variety of high-profile clients, such as Justin Bieber and race car driver Helio Castroneves.

David O. Marx, another defense attorney, referred to Black as the greatest in the field, likening him to basketball great Michael Jordan. “He worked harder than anyone I know and stood firm against all the prosecutors he faced. I truly miss him. His influence on criminal defense can’t be overstated,” Marx remarked in an email to the news outlet.

In 1991, Smith faced a trial after being accused of assaulting a woman in Palm Beach, which gained significant media attention. Ultimately, he was found not guilty.

Smith, who is the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, is actively involved in an organization aimed at banning land mining.

Bieber, another client, was charged with drag racing and driving under the influence but pled not guilty to both misdemeanor charges.

Castroneves, who won the Indianapolis 500, was acquitted of accusations related to attempts to evade over $2 million in taxes.

Additionally, Black represented the late conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh and was involved in a notable case that included a hospital incident concerning a Georgetown University tennis coach and his daughter.

This acquittal was a significant event, contributing to a riot in Miami back in 1989.
