ICE Detention Numbers Surge Under Biden
Recent data shows a significant increase in immigration detention requests in New York City compared to the previous administration. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that while President Trump was in office, Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) initiated around 6,025 detainer requests since January. In contrast, under President Biden’s term, only 9,472 detainers were issued throughout his presidency, which translates to an increase of over 400% in detentions in just six months.
Despite this rise in detention requests, officials note that New York City only honors a few of them. Tricia McLaughlin, DHS Deputy Commissioner, remarked that the current rate of detainer requests in NYC is unprecedented, highlighting the stark contrast to Biden’s tenure.
McLaughlin explained, “Sanctuary politicians, like Mayor Eric Adams, are failing to address the issues stemming from illegal immigration, allowing criminal elements to jeopardize the safety of American communities.” She continued, stating that many individuals released during Biden’s administration posed risks, implicating them in serious crimes, including violent offenses.
Additionally, DHS reports an alarming rise in assaults on ICE officers, with incidents increasing by 830% since Trump took office. They attribute this violence largely to anti-ICE sentiments and sanctuary policies. Over the past few days, tensions surrounding New York City’s immigration policies have reignited discussions on public safety, especially after various law enforcement officers faced dire threats.
The agency’s statement underscored the serious challenges that ICE agents encounter, further exacerbated by negative portrayals in political discourse. In one instance, a threatening post from an Ohio man allegedly targeted an ICE officer, reflecting broader resentment against immigration enforcement.
The issue has brought attention back to the city’s sanctuary policies, especially after high-profile incidents involving individuals with questionable immigration backgrounds. For example, a Dominican national was apprehended by Border Patrol during the Biden administration and later released, drawing criticism for the policies that allowed this. Data highlights that, from January 2023 to October 2024, over 3,200 immigrants in city shelters faced legal troubles.
