Washington Post Announces Changes to WP Ventures
The Washington Post recently informed its team about significant developments regarding “Third Newsroom,” a project known as WP Ventures. This initiative aims to create content that appeals to social media audiences, distinguishing itself from the traditional news and opinions sections of the paper.
Almost a year after its inception, Krissah Thompson, who has been leading WP Ventures, will depart from the organization at the end of this month. She plans to accept a voluntary separation package offered by the Post. Interestingly, Thompson’s exit aligns with what the company says is a necessary evolution of WP Ventures, which is now said to be fully detached from the newsroom operations.
The CEO of the Washington Post has encouraged any staff who feel out of step with the new direction to consider other job opportunities. “A year ago we set out to understand and respond to the evolving dynamics of news,” the memo stated, highlighting a focus on reach, relevance, and revenue.
As mentioned in another memo that Fox News Digital obtained, the project is characterized as being “always aimed at continuous evolution.” This suggests an ongoing attempt to adapt to changes in the media landscape, especially as it pertains to off-platform content and creators.
Suzi Watford, Chief Strategy Officer, will now oversee WP Ventures. The future of this initiative apparently involves crafting personality-driven content and franchises aligned with topics that resonate with a targeted audience. This will encompass various formats, including audio, video, newsletters, and events.
While it seems there are plans for change, the memo reassured that not all teams involved in WP Ventures will experience a shake-up. Some teams will continue their work within the traditional newsroom framework.
These changes come amid a wave of departures among top talent at the Post, resulting in concerns over low morale and internal challenges.
